Managing Terraform configurations efficiently with workspaces is a game-changer for keeping your code DRY (Don't Repeat Yourself). However, when dealing with multiple workspaces, it can be challenging to keep tabs on your current working environment. In this post, we'll explore how to display the active Terraform workspace in your terminal prompt to avoid unintended disasters, such as executing terraform destroy on the wrong setup.

Terraform Workspaces you say?


If you're unfamiliar with them, Terraform workspaces provide a solution for handling multiple environments (e.g., dev, staging, production) within a single Terraform configuration. Before the introduction of workspaces, maintaining separate Terraform configurations for each environment was necessary. This approach was less than ideal due to extensive code duplication, leading to potential errors. With workspaces, a single Terraform configuration suffices, and workspaces help manage the state of each environment independently.

Consider this example: a Terraform configuration creating a VPC, a subnet, and an EC2 instance. By running terraform workspace new staging and terraform workspace new production, you can create distinct workspaces for each environment. Execute `terraform apply` in the desired workspace to deploy the VPC, subnet, and EC2 instance uniquely for that environment, each having its isolated state file.

Displaying the Current Workspace in Your Terminal Prompt


Now that we grasp the concept of workspaces, let's explore how to exhibit the active workspace in our terminal prompt. This proves invaluable when navigating multiple workspaces, ensuring you're in the correct one to avoid unintended operations like applying changes to the wrong environment.
The greatest fear any developer has is to accidentally run `terraform apply` in the wrong workspace and accidentally destroy production. By showing the current workspace in your terminal prompt, you can be sure that you are working in the correct workspace.
For users of zsh with Oh My Zsh, a popular zsh configuration framework, the built-in terraform plugin offers autocompletion and workspace indication in the prompt. Add the following lines to your configuration file:

Elon Musk har skapt furore med sitt oppkjøp av Twitter. Facebook bryt stadig personvernlovene. Men det finst faktisk eit heilt univers av sosiale medium der ute som lét oss eiga innhaldet vårt sjølv, på tvers av appar, utan personvernbrytande reklamar og sporing. Lat meg introdusere deg for Fødiverset.

Som e-post for sosiale medium

The Fediverse, ofte kalla Fødiverset eller Allheimen på norsk, består av ei mengd desentraliserte sosiale medium. For å forstå kva det betyr, lat oss snakka litt om e-post. Eg kan ha Gmail, du kan ha Yahoo. Likevel kan me senda e-post til kvarandre, og bruka akkurat den e-postklienten/-appen me vil, til dømes Apple sin Mail-app. Fødiverset er som e-post for sosiale medium. Sjå for deg at du har éin app og kan få både tweets, Instagram-postar, Facebook-meldingar og snaps i den same straumen.

E-post fungerer som det gjer fordi det baserer seg på ein protokoll som alle e-posttenarar kan snakka og forstå. Denne protokollen heiter SMTP og er frå 1972. Alle applikasjonar som er knytta til Fødiverset må òg snakka det same språket, og har sin eigen protokoll. Denne heiter ActivityPub og vart standardisert av World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) i 2018. I denne artikkelen vil eg ikkje gå for mykje inn på det tekniske. Lat oss heller snakka om kva du finn på Fødiverset, korleis du kjem i gang, og kva det kan bety i framtida.

Eit univers av appar

Sjølv om du ikkje har høyrt om Fediverse før, så kan det kanskje vere du har høyrt om Mastodon. Dette er den klart mest populære appen på Fediverse. Mastodon er ein slags Twitter-klone, der ein deler korte meldingar i kjent Twitter-stil. Ein har òg Instagram-klonen Pixelfed, PeerTube for YouTube, Friendica liknar på Facebook, Bookwyrm liknar på Goodreads. Det finst mange appar på Fødiverset, og alle kan snakke med kvarandre.

Dersom du opprettar ein konto på Mastodon, så kan du så klart følgje andre Mastodon-brukarar, men òg brukarar på Friendica, Pixelfed eller andre ActivityPub-støttande tenester. Det er dette som er så kult med Fødiverset! Det er eit heilt økosystem. Du er ikkje nøydd til å registrere deg hjå éin aktør, du kan finne akkurat den appen eller tenesta som passar deg og dine behov best – og framleis kommunisere med alle andre.

Du må velje server

Dersom du har lyst å kome i gang med Fødiverset så er det første du må gjere å velje server. Akkurat som at du må velje e-posttilbydar som Gmail eller Outlook for å sende e-post, så må du det same for meldingar i Fødiverset.

Kvar server kan ha forskjellige reglar og ønska innhald, så les gjennom dette før du registrerer deg. Den klart største er Mastodon sin hovudserver på https://mastodon.social. Det kan vere ein fin plass å starte. Eit par populære norske er https://oslo.town og https://snabelen.no. Nokre serverar kan nekte å samhandle med andre serverar. Mastodon har gode verktøy for å flytte frå ein server til ein annan, men du er ikkje garantert at andre ActivityPub-appar støttar dette.

Du kan òg køyre din heilt eigen server, om du vil! Mastodon tilbyr kode som gjer det ganske enkelt å setje opp sin eigen Mastodon-instans. Då har du full kontroll, men må sjølvsagt stå for vedlikehald og driftskostnadar sjølv.

Etter du har registrert deg får du ei adresse som andre kan bruka for å identifisere deg. Denne liknar litt på ei e-postadresse. Slike adresser startar med @ etterfølgd av brukarnamnet ditt, etterfølgd av ny @ og så serveren sitt domene. Adressa mi er @draperunner@mastodon.social. Følg meg!

Fødiverset har sine utfordringar

Fødiverset kan verte stort. Verkeleg stort. Men det er nok av utfordringar som kan setje kjeppar i hjula for dette. Eg vil nemne nokre her.

Brukarvennlegheita er ei utfordring. Mastodon er ei digg teneste å bruke, men fleire av dei andre appane ber preg av å vere designa av utviklarane. Folk forventar digge tenester, så det vil vere eit krav for suksess.

Det at ein må finne ut kva for ein server ein vil kopla seg til først, er eit steg ein ikkje treng i dei sentraliserte sosiale media. Om ein vil vere på fleire tenester og serverar, så må ein registrere kontoar på kvar enkelt. Det er rett og slett litt meir komplekst enn tradisjonelle tenester. Mastodon har riktignok gjort det lettare på sine offisielle tenarar ved at mastodon.social er standardvalet.

Å finne folk ein vil følgje er heller ikkje så lett. Ein kan ikkje søke på tvers av alle moglege serverar. Det er inga oppslagsbok for alle brukarar på Fødiverset, sjølv om nokon har prøvd å lage det (t.d. nedlagte FediFinder). Ein kan altså ikkje søke etter folk med fullt namn som på Facebook, ein må få tak i adresser på andre måtar.

Mange populære serverar er i dag drivne av enkeltpersonar. Driftskostnadar veks jo fleire som brukar ein server, så dersom desse kostnadane vert større enn personen kan takle, så må ein kanskje stenge ned. Dette fører til usikkerheit. I tillegg må ein stole på at dei som driv serveren handsamar persondataen og innhaldet ditt på ein forsvarleg måte. Moderering av innhald kan òg verte krevjande for små aktørar dersom serveren vert populær.

Den største utfordringa for konkurrerande sosiale medium er at folk vil vere der andre folk er. Det er vanskeleg å slette Facebook fordi alle vennane dine er nettopp der. Det er rett og slett for få som brukar Fødiverset i dag. Særleg innhaldsprodusentar er viktige å få over.

Store krefter i sving

Sjølv om det er forholdsvis få på Fødiverset i dag, så er det store aktørar der ute med seriøse initiativ for å ta i bruk ActivityPub-protokollen og dermed Fødiverset. WordPress lanserte ActivityPub-plugin i oktober i år. Tumblr har sagt at dei ønskjer å ta i bruk protokollen, men det kan sjå ut som at dette arbeidet har stoppa opp. Flickr har òg ytra at dei snusar på ActivityPub-integrasjon. Om desse får med alle brukarane sine over til Fødiverset, så snakkar me game-changer.

Mozilla Foundation, som står bak blant anna Firefox, viser stor interesse for ActivityPub. Mozilla ønskjer å bidra til å lage sunne og bærekraftige sosiale opplevingar på internett, og har stor pondus med si lange erfaring med open-source-arbeid. Dei har oppretta https://mozilla.social som i skrivande stund har ei venteliste for å joine. Fødiverset treng slike store, tillitsvekkande aktørar.

BBC eksperimenterer med plattformen og forklarar på Fediverse-podcasten Dot Social om tankane og planane sine rundt dette.

Tydelegvis skal over to millionar brukarar ha flytta over frå Twitter til Mastodon allereie november 2022. Det kan tenkast at dette har aukt ein del sidan då.

Eig din eigen data

Ved å køyre din eigen server kan du eige din eigen data. Det er kanskje ikkje så aktuelt for enkeltpersonar, men for bedrifter og organisasjonar burde dette vere interessant. I november 2022 – etter Elon Musk sitt oppkjøp av Twitter – kunne me lese at Politiet var på utkikk etter eit alternativ til Twitter der dei ikkje er avhengige av ein tredjepart. Høyrest ikkje det perfekt ut for Fødiverset?

Offentlege etatar, kommunar og andre verksemder burde vere på Fødiverset. Ikkje tving folk til å vere på sosiale plattformar som bryt personvernet, for å tene verdas rikaste folk.

Samtidig er det forståeleg at Politiet og andre ikkje er på Fødiverset. For dei vil nå folket, og folket er ikkje der – i dag. Det er ein «høna eller egget»-situasjon: innhaldsprodusentane vil ikkje ta i bruk Fødiverset før det er mange nok folk der. Folk vil ikkje vere på Fødiverset før det er nok innhald der.

Spre ordet!

Fødiverset er svært lovande og kan stå for ei drastisk endring av korleis me brukar sosiale medium i framtida. Det er eit heilt økosystem av tenester der ute, med protokollen ActivityPub som motor for det heile. Med Fødiverset kan me skape friare og sunnare samfunn på internett. Men det har mange utfordringar framfor seg som gjer at det vil ta tid før dette vert ein realitet.

Fødiverset – framtida til sosiale medium?

Using the tree of knowledge and the monkey mind concept as a metaphor for thinking when doing experience design.

Have you heard of the daoist concept of the monkey mind? The monkey represents your focus, your intentional thought. You can tell it what to do, what branch of thought to sit on - but if you're not telling it where to be, it will jump around from branch to branch.

Neuroscientists have since described this phenomenon in more mechanistic terms, and named the undirected monkey the "default- mode network", more of a mind wandering state of mind. It is the state of mind we are in when we are not thinking about anything in particular.

What I want to do today is to expand this metaphor to make it more useful as a tool for experience design. When we design experiences we should know a bit about how our brain works - after all, that is where our experiences are created.




This is your mind monkey. Lose your focus and it will start jumping along to neighbouring branches - freely associating along.

However, suddenly you, the outside you, are given a task to complete. This can be adjusting the headlights in your rental car, negotiating your online banking, or even just entering into a hotel lobby.


Suddenly you are directing your inner monkey, and you need to tell it where to go. Each of the buttons on your rental car represents a branch for your monkey to go down, and some knobs might have more than one option. This is the branching structure of the possibilities you have before you, the structure of the information tree, the information hierarchy.


Here we are focusing on the informational aspect of experience design. Your application has, most likely, some hierarchical or branching structures, and some web like connections. Now we need to figure out, what are the rules regarding how much information a user can take in at once? How many branches can their monkeys see?

The first person to do research on this, in the context of modern psychology, was George A. Miller, who in 1956 presented the landmark paper "The Magical Number Seven, plus or minus two."

Milgram argued that the space of our short term memory was just this large. Around seven items. I like to think of it as the space of an average sentence, the length of a melodic theme, the amount of digits after which we give up, and so on.

And what's more. Assume that the user is already thinking about what they want for dinner, and what their mother told them on the phone. Your practical space for the design of new elements that you want to present to your user is about 4 "things." Four branches to jump to.



I know you have a lot of questions. Let me list them:

1. How can we ever do anything if we can only relate to four things?

2. How can I make sure not to overwhelm the user?

3. How can there ever be more complex things in this world?



I'm glad you asked! Let us tackle these one by one.



1. How can we ever do anything if we can only relate to four things?

Ah, I see where I misled you. The short term memory is a sort of window for what you can think of at the same time. Think of the monkey only being able to see four branches. But once you move along, you'll be able to see four more. We can jump from thought to thought, never knowing where it will take us.

There is also the concept of "chunking". When we learn our ABCs, we have to learn one letter at a time. But pretty soon we are making words, and shortly we'll be reading words instead of letters. This is the process of chunking. Take four things, and make them one. Four letters become one: "four -> 4".

The first time a user sees a date picker, they will have to puzzle out how it works. This element alone will be daunting to the child that first encounters it. But after a while, an experiences user will have chunked it down as a singular element. It is simply "the date picker."


This also goes for user interfaces in general. We may provide a top level menu. This top level menu has a branching structure. Before the user has familiarised themselves with our program, then top level branches are all there is. They cannot think "beyond" the top level menu. However, after a while, they learn to chunk simpler actions under the pre- chunked terms we have given them.

As an example. Say you want to send an email to Mark. You open your browser, then go into your email provider, then press "compose." The complete structure of the tree of possibilities, were in this instance chunked into a top level action of "open your browser", a very wide tree that is most often the start of your computing experience.



2. How can I make sure not to overwhelm the user?

As I hinted at before. It is our task as UI and UX designers to trim the branches of our informational structures, to make sure that there are never too many options. For any single page, if it should naturally contain many elements, make sure to group them into separate categories not containing more than a handful of elements.

Where possible, we should introduce functions gradually. And if all else fails, use checklist-like structures - which are excellent for guiding users through unfamiliar, complex, and rarely used interactions.

If you are asking the user to put on the dishwasher. Having more than four or five top level options is good. If you are asking the user to perform a yearly maintenance on that same dishwasher, you better provide a checklist. (knowledge here comes courtesy of the Checklist Manifesto)



3. How can there ever be more complex things in this world?

You should already know the answer to this one by now. We are living in a world of systems, of hierarchies of hierarchies of interactions, each of which we only interact with on the surface level, made by clever designers such as you and me to present usable surfaces of interaction.

We don't need to be afraid of making complex programs for our users. I, for one, believe in the capacity of people to do amazing things. But we need to take care of their monkey minds, only being able to see four branches at a time - prone to wandering away on a random walk if they are overwhelmed, lost in the tree of knowledge.

Generative AI, like Large Language Models (LLMs), has exploded in both use and usefulness this past year. Tools such as GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT, with the ability to create content, solve complex problems, and automate tasks, are set to revolutionize how our teams operate. From designing user interfaces to predicting market trends, generative AI tools are not just assistants but active contributors in the creative process—a shift allowing for less busywork, as routine tasks can be completed more efficiently with AI help.


Generative AI can significantly enhance creativity within product teams. For example, AI-driven design tools can generate multiple design options, enabling designers to explore creative avenues they might not have considered. Similarly, AI-powered data analysis can unveil insights that drive more informed decision-making.


Despite its benefits, integrating generative AI into cross-functional teams is not without challenges. Teams must navigate issues related to data privacy, ethical AI use, and maintaining a balance between human creativity and AI efficiency.


As generative AI continues to evolve, its impact on cross-functional product teams will only grow. Teams that effectively integrate these technologies will find themselves at the forefront of innovation in digital product development.


AI can do the thunking; humans can do the thinking. Increase your productivity, automate more advanced menial tasks, and use the freed-up time to improve yourself, your team, and your product.

AI as a Product Feature

Users' experiences with AI-enhanced products like Lightroom, Notion, or even Snapchat put new pressure on teams wanting to deliver top-notch UX experiences. But for most teams, simply putting an LLM in the front end and calling it a day is not enough. Even though access to AI is only an API call away, they excel at giving plausible examples, not necessarily the correct answer to user requests.

So don't just embed GPT and pine for the fjords. Understand your user's jobs to be done and use AI to actually improve their experiences with your product. Today's tools are good at summarizing qualitative information, understanding user input, and generating funny images and avatars. But what is unique about the experience of your product in the context of your user base?

Find an answer to that question, either as a golden use case enabling new features that confer a long-term advantage, or improve your table stakes features to enhance your users' efficiency within your product. Iteration, as always, is key, so move fast, run experiments, and understand the effects these have on your users.

If your company has an AI strategy (as it should), use that to guide you. If not, this simple hierarchy of steps might be useful:

Experiment with LLM in the surface of your product. Where can it easily provide user value? These are your low-hanging fruits.

Automate workflows. Make experiences faster, summarize, and simplify.

Replace workflows. Redesign using the new tools, enabling new workflows while removing others.

Just do the customer's work outright.

Learn as you go along, and don't forget about the fundamentals of digital product development. Focus on your users' pain points and your golden use cases. And, if you're good, leverage first-party data as your moat.

Summary

To summarize, in the hands of a skilled team, AI tools can be huge productivity boosters, and the time for experimenting with them is now! Generative AI is to products as salt is to food. Every dish needs some, but additional spice is most of the time needed (except for in traditional Norwegian cuisine).
